Abstract

Objective: To determine the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. Assess factors associated with changes in the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) in this population. Subjects and methods: Using a cross-sectional descriptive study design to investigate factors associated with changes in NLR among patients with pulmonary tuberculosis at Da Nang Lung Hospital. Results: The mean NLR in pulmonary tuberculosis patients was 5.24 ± 4.26. An elevated NLR (> 3) was significantly associated with body mass index (BMI) (p < 0.001). Patients with BMI < 18.5 kg/m² had a 2.07-fold higher risk of elevated NLR compared with those with BMI ≥ 18.5 kg/m². Elevated NLR (> 3) was also significantly associated with a history of tuberculosis treatment (p = 0.031). Patients with recurrent tuberculosis had a 1.94-fold higher risk of elevated NLR than those with newly diagnosed tuberculosis. Conclusions: NLR is commonly elevated in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis, particularly among those who are underweight (BMI < 18.5 kg/m²) and those with recurrent tuberculosis.
