Abstract

Objective: To describe the current status of surgical site infection (SSI) following traumatic brain injury (TBI) surgery among patients after hospital discharge. Methods: A prospective follow-up study was conducted on 260 patients who underwent surgery for traumatic brain injury at the Department of Neurosurgery II, Viet Duc University Hospital from January to September 2025. Results: Abnormal conditions at the surgical site, including chronic non-healing wounds after surgery, purulent discharge, crust formation, redness around the incision, worsening wound condition, swelling, and fever, were observed in 80 out of 260 patients (30.8%). Clean surgeries accounted for 85.4%, contaminated surgeries for 12.3%, and dirty surgeries for 2.3%. Most procedures were emergency surgeries (95.4%). The mean operative time was 87.7 minutes, ranging from 20 to 240 minutes. The mean hospital stay was 4.7 ± 1.2 days. Conclusion: The overall surgical site infection rate was 7/260 (2.7%). Among these, superficial SSI accounted for 5/260 (1.9%), while deep SSI accounted for 2/260 (0.8%).
